What is Swedish Massage Therapy?
Swedish massage therapy is the most common practice of massage in the western world and for good reason; its primary goals are to relax the entire body and promote well-being – while avoiding the strain or pain that can occur with other, more intense forms of massage therapy. The Swedish massage method practices five long gliding stroke styles: effleurage (sliding), friction, petrissage (kneading), tapotement (percussion-like tapping) and vibration that encourage blood flow back to the heart. This increased circulation leads to higher levels of oxygen in the blood, decreased muscle toxins and tension, and enhanced flexibility.
A study on massage therapy conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, found that volunteers who received a 45-minute Swedish massage experienced a significant increase in the number of lymphocytes, (white blood cells that have been known to help fight the cold and flu) and a decrease in cortisol (stress hormone) levels, as well as arginine vasopressin (a hormone that can lead to increases in cortisol). Decreasing cortisol levels is integral to warding off Chronic Stress, a condition that affects bone density, immunity, blood pressure, cognitive performance and more.
Swedish massage techniques are most effective when designed to the specific needs of your body. We encourage you to communicate with your professional massage therapist before and during your Swedish massage session about any aches, pains, injuries or tight muscles you may have so they can customize your massage to give you optimal relief.
