Going to the state fair can be quite a treat. With all of the fun games, rides, artwork and entertainment, we just can’t get enough! Many of us also look forward to the delicious food served at the fair, but those of us who want to keep our bodies nourished with healthier food may be hesitant to indulge. Luckily, there is a way to enjoy delicious fair food without causing us to blimp up and feel tired and lethargic afterwards. Check out the following best and worst foods for you in terms of health, to eat at the fair.
WORST: Funnel Cake
It may not be a surprise to you that deep fried cake batter with oodles of powdered sugar isn’t the best for you. But would you believe that a funnel cake can contain 760 calories and almost 50 grams of fat?! Crazy, right?!
BEST: Kettle Corn
Kettle corn is a great way to satisfy your sweet and salty cravings all at once. Kettle corn can be most delicious when eaten at the fair because that is where it is usually made the traditional way, which consists of air popping the popcorn and glazing it in homemade caramel made from real sugar, then cooked in a large kettle. You can indulge in 3 cups of this deliciousness for just under 200 calories. Bonus: you’ll get 4 filling grams of fiber!
WORST: Giant Turkey Leg
While this food may seem harmless since it isn’t fried and it’s made up of lean meat, the size of it is enough to feed a football team. As a result, a giant turkey leg can set you back 1000 calories and nearly a day’s worth of fat!
BEST: Boiled Peanuts
These young peanuts are boiled for hours in salt water and are loaded with healthy fats and filling proteins. If you can’t find boiled peanuts, look for different types of nuts that have been roasted, or try a jumbo pickle to satisfy your salt craving, which only has about 20 calories. I’m on board!
